Federation Takes Position on the Elimination of Mandatory Long-Term Census
The Federation has submitted a letter to Minister Tony Clement, sharing the concerns of the social sciences and humanities research community regarding the elimination of the mandatory long-form census and the impact this decision will have on research and innovation in Canada.
Creating Canada's Digital Society
As part of the Federal government's national consultation on the digital economy, the Federation has submitted a brief which contains suggestions on how Canada can best nurture the development of its digital economy for the benefit of all Canadians.
In its brief, the Federation is recommending to improve access to knowledge and content, develop talent and digital skills, expand infrastructure, create digital repositories, and eliminate Crown copyright. It also encourages the federal government to tap into social sciences and humanities expertise to facilitate the transition to a digital society.
The proposed roadmap to a digital society is available in the Federation's submission to the Digital Economy Consultation.

Congress 2011 - Time to Start Planning
To be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, from May 28 to June 5, Congress 2011 will be jointly hosted by the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University. The Congress team has compiled a list of resources that can help you start planning your trip. Please consider making travel arrangements as early as possible. When booking hotels in Fredericton, be sure to mention that you are part of the delegation to Congress 2011 to receive special rates and priority reservations.
SSHRC Launches Two New Partnership Funding Opportunities
SSHRC has launched the first stage of its renewed program architecture. Funding opportunities within the renewed architecture will fall under three umbrella programs: Talent, Insight and Connection.
The two new funding opportunities launched offer grants in support of formal partnerships and span the Insight and Connection programs:
- Partnership Development Grants (application deadline November 25, 2010)
- Partnership Grants (application deadline January 31, 2011)

The Royal Society of Canada's (RSC) Annual Symposium
SSH Community Invited to Submit Proposals for New Knowledge Mobilization Networks
The Networks of Centres of Excellence Steering Committee is inviting the research community to submit letters of intent for the 2011 competition to create new networks in knowledge mobilization. These networks will address critical issues of scientific, intellectual, social, economic and/or cultural significance in areas of strategic importance for Canada. Approximately $1.2 million per year will be available to support NCE-KM networks. Successful networks will be awarded up to $400,000 per year for four years, with a possible three-year extension. New Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Launched
The Government of Canada just announced the launch of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships, which aims to attract and develop leading postdoctoral researchers in Canada. One third of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded to researchers in the humanities and social sciences.
The government also announced support for the Next Einstein Initiative, which will create a network of 15 centres of academic excellence across Africa in fields related to science and technology. Read more...
Call for Proposals - 2010 Canadian Science Policy Conference
The Canadian Science Policy Conference is an annual event designed as a multi-sector forum for fostering science policy discourse in Canada. This year's themes include increasing Canada's productivity using science and technology; creating and retaining scientific talent in Canada; and major issues in Canadian science policy. Bringing together about 500 delegates, the 2010 conference will take place in Montreal October 20-22. Read more...
