Budget signals the value of social science and humanities research
March 4, 2010 - Ottawa - The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences is encouraged that the federal government has recognised the critical role of the social sciences and humanities research in tomorrow's economy.
"Viewed within the larger economic context, we consider this budget to be a vote of confidence in the ability of researchers and scholars to support our country's innovation capacity and competitiveness," said Noreen Golfman, President of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences. "Today's research is interdisciplinary by nature and researchers from all disciplines bring expertise essential for success in the new economy."
"In addition to the increase to the annual budget of the granting councils, researchers in the social sciences and humanities should have the opportunity to access some of the funding set aside for post doctoral fellowships and community colleges," added Golfman.
