Federal Budget 2010: Federation calls for "strategic investments for securing our future"

Budget day 2010 is quickly approaching. On Feb 18, Federation president Noreen Golfman sent a letter to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, building on the Federation's continuing advocacy and highlighting the importance of investing in the social sciences and humanities. Available on the Federation website, this letter outlines the Federation's recommended budget priorities, totalling $100 million in funding to SSHRC over 3 years:

  • Increased support of $50 million to provide opportunities for new researchers
  • $25 million investment in collaborative international endeavours
  • $25 million of directed funding for social innovation, connecting communities and researchers across disciplines

The Federation has encouraged Minister Flaherty to recognize the social sciences and humanities community's vital contributions to innovation, economic security and improving well-being. No single discipline holds all of the answers, and ensuring our economy gets back on track will require the full mobilization of our country's entire innovative capacity.

Following budget day, March 4, the Federation will release a statement to the community, including a summary highlighting the areas of Budget 2010 relating to research, innovation and the granting agencies. Check back on the Federation website and blog for more information after the budget is released.
