Federation appoints new Executive Director

Ottawa - Dr Donald Fisher, President of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jody Ciufo as the new Executive Director of the Federation. Ms. Ciufo’s five year term begins November 1, 2006.

“Jody’s energy, enthusiasm and strong commitment to higher education will serve her well in this new role,” Dr Fisher said. “We know she will help to bring the Federation and its many programs to new levels of success.”

Ms. Ciufo has been with the Federation since June 2002 when she joined as Director of Public Affairs. She was promoted to the role of Associate Executive Director in October of 2003. She has been Acting Executive Director since July 1st, replacing Paul Ledwell who has moved to a new position as the Director of Government Affairs at the University of Ottawa.

“I’m extremely happy that I’ve been given the chance to lead such a great organization,” said Ms. Ciufo. “I take this position knowing that we can build on our past achievements to do even more for the social sciences and humanities in Canada.”

Ms. Ciufo holds a B.A. (Hons) in English from Carleton University (1984) and an MBA from the University of Ottawa (1995) with emphasis on policy and marketing.

With 20 years of management experience in not-for-profit organizations, mostly at the national level, she has worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Automobile Association and the Carleton Roman Catholic School Board.

The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest single segment of Canada’s research community. It represents 66 scholarly associations, 71 universities and colleges, and over 50,000 researchers, practitioners and graduate students. The Federation works to communicate the value of research and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. It manages the permanent secretariat of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, which is the largest academic gathering of its kind in North America and the Aid to
Scholarly Publications Programme, which provides financial support for the publication of manuscripts authored by Canadian scholars.
