The Political Challenge: Implementing the new budget

Ottawa , February 5, 2009 In these times of global economic downturn, innovative approaches and new ideas are required to effect a positive impact on recovery, prosperity and the quality of life for Canadians.

Dr. Marjorie Griffin Cohen will share new ideas for successful long-term economic planning. These ideas are the result of a five-year study of the effects on people of public policy changes during an economic downturn.

Dr. Cohen argues that Canada should pursue policies that encourage collective spending and spark broad economic stimulus. These policies would help Canada come out of the recession further ahead than when it began. Dr. Cohen will explain the economic justifications for focusing government spending on housing, making infrastructure projects more people-oriented, expanding the benefits of the Canada Pension Plan and making Employment Insurance more accessible. These actions will create broad economic stimulus with major impact across the country.

A political economy professor at Simon Fraser University , Dr. Cohen has written extensively in the areas of public policy and political economy with special emphasis on issues concerning international trade agreements, the Canadian economy, electricity deregulation, women, and labour.

Dr. Cohen will unveil the results of her research at an event for parliamentarians, government policy-makers and community leaders organized by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences:

7:45 - 9:00 am, Tuesday, February 10
Parliamentary Restaurant, 6th Floor, Centre Block
A hot breakfast will be served.

Dr. Cohen will be available for media interviews on Monday, February 9 and after her presentation the next day.

Representing more than 50,000 researchers in 66 scholarly associations, 73 universities and colleges, and seven affiliates across the country, the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences is the voice of Canada ’s humanities and social sciences community.
