Who manages the Aid to Scholarly Publications Program?
The Program is managed by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
How is the Program funded?
Funding is provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
How many books are funded per year?
In the recent past, one-hundred-and-eighty books plus five books involving translations have been funded per year.
What is the amount of a Program’s grant?
Each grant provides eight-thousand dollars. Books involving translations receive additional funding to cover translation costs.
When can I apply for funding?
There are no application deadlines. Applications are processed and funding is awarded throughout the year.
How does the selection process work?
Titles are selected based on how much they advance scholarship in their area of discipline. All titles undergo a rigorous peer-review process and may require authors to revise their manuscripts. Please see the submission process page for detailed information.
To whom are the funds paid?
All funds are paid directly to a book’s publisher upon publication of the book.
Can funding be used to support my research?
The Program does not award research grants. Funding is awarded to support the publication and marketing of scholarly works that are unlikely to be published for commercial purpose. Scholars seeking research grants may wish to contact the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Is Program funding available to non-Canadians?
With few exceptions, Program-funded authors must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
Can non-Canadian presses participate in the Program?
Authors may work with non-Canadian presses in certain instances, subject to approval by the Program’s Management Board. Prospective applicants with special circumstances are encouraged to contact the Program Secretariat before applying to ensure the eligibility of their publisher. Can I obtain Program funding to publish in a journal?
No, the fund does not support journals.
