Become a Member

Interested in joining the Federation? Here is the information you need to know. Please note that applications for membership are approved at the annual Federation General Assembly meeting held in March.

Scholarly Associations

If your association has been in existence for three years and has a minimum of 80 members, the majority of whom are engaged in research in the humanities and social sciences, the Federation invites you to become a member.

Is your association eligible to become a member of the Federation? Associations requesting membership need to demonstrate that they:

  • support Federation Objectives
  • are composed of at least 80 members
  • have a programme of activities with substantial humanities and/or social science content relating to the objectives of the Federation
  • are open to membership of individual humanists and social scientists with no restrictions other than appropriate academic qualifications
  • have a majority of members engaged in teaching or research
  • are able to pay membership fees as set by the General Assembly
  • accept the by-laws of the Federation subject to regular amendment procedures provided (available for viewing on the Federation’s website)
  • have been active for a minimum of three years and have possessed for this period a constitution duly approved by its membership

Universities and colleges

If your university or college is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada or conforms to its guidelines, we invite you to become a member of the Federation.

Is your institution eligible to become a member of the Federation? Institutions requesting membership need to demonstrate that they:

  • are a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada or conform to its guidelines
  • support Federation Objectives
  • have a program of activities with substantial humanities and social science content relating to the objectives of the Federation
  • pay annual membership fees as set by the General Assembly
  • accept the by-laws of the Federation subject to regular amendment

Affiliate Members

As an affiliate member, you will enjoy a number of benefits, one of which is a complimentary registration at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. You will be given access to special events such as the Breakfasts on Campus, the Research in Society Lecture and to any other sessions or keynote addresses organized by individual associations open to the public.

As well, affiliate members are entitled to observer status at Federation meetings, regular bulletins, access to Federation resource materials, and a complimentary pass to each of the six Big Thinking lectures which are specifically designed to bring research directly to the attention of parliamentarians, government officials, the broader public and the media.
